Terror must be crushed, Netanyahu says
Last Updated Wed, 11 Sep 2002 14:34:28
TORONTO - Former Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the Sept. 11 attacks were a "wakeup call from hell," and warned terrorists have to be "vanquished completely."

Netanyahu was speaking to an audience of about 1,600 people in Toronto Tuesday night. He warned that the destruction experienced in New York could happen elsewhere unless the "mad zealots" were destroyed.

The audience gave him a standing ovation, while outside, about 1,000 protesters shouted from behind police barricades. At least one person was treated for minor injuries after being hit by a rock.

The relatively peaceful protest contrasted with a more violent demonstration Monday in Montreal.

An afternoon speech at Montreal's Concordia University was cancelled because of the violence. Police used pepper spray and batons as they confronted protesters who threw chairs and newspaper boxes.

Netanyahu, who had vowed not to let the protest disrupt his speaking tour, was visibly angry. He accused the demonstrators of supporting terrorism.

"They're supporting Saddam Hussein, they're supporting (Yasser) Arafat, they're supporting (Osama) bin Laden," said Netanyahu.

One unidentified man said he simply came to hear Netanyahu speak. He said protesters kicked and spit on him, told him it was a Palestinian checkpoint and warned him to get out of the country.

"Being a Holocaust survivor, it was fascism at work — Europe 1939," he said.

Officials at Concordia said they're studying tapes of the protest and are ready to expel students involved.

An evening speech in Winnipeg went ahead without major incident.

Netanyahu also spoke in Ottawa on Tuesday.

He's on a four-city tour of Canada to promote an anti-terror campaign and raise money for Israel.
